Let Down Reckoning

If you expect nothing from somebody you are never disappointed.

Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar

Don’t make me, I don’t want to

I’ve cried all my tears already

The chaos that change brings rocks me steady

Wish it wasn’t so, but here we go again —

The Let Down Reckoning

***

Big dreams, big heart

Surrounded by small minds

Foolish varieties of all kinds

Ignorance a home finds

***

It doesn’t make sense

It doesn’t feel real

The way a heart breaks

Painful and cold.

High stakes.

Paintings by Sara Riches

I’m glad I didn’t get my hopes up

Or fall in love with the idea of it

Should have anticipated another split

Deep down, I knew from the start

Feel that? That’s everything being torn apart.

***

Pink haze leaves me in a daze

My heart is always welcome to a cage

My mind always welcome to chains

As circumstances rip out each page

***

Consequences dominate my nights

Coincidence steals my days

Looking for logic, trapped by my crazy ways

Riding the Let Down Reckoning’s rough waves

  1. This is full of both beauty and anguish. ❤

    I feel these lines most:

"My heart is always welcome to a cage
My mind always welcome to chains"

    Thank you.

    1. Thank you, Michael. I appreciate you so much for taking the time to make such thoughtful comments. Those lines were the first two that sparked this poem. I’m so pleased you related to it.

So problematic for passionate, loving, brilliant minds to deal with. I feel for you in your anguish as another one bites the dust.
