Pink Skies Up Ahead

Do you know the song Blue Skies? It begins…

Blue skies
Smiling at me
Nothing but blue skies
Do I see

The last verse is equally as beautiful.

Blue days
All of them gone
Nothing but blue skies
From now on

You can’t help but smile when you hear or read it. The song is quite possibly one of the most cheerful songs in the world, a 1920’s classic, recorded over the years by several prominent artists. I’m partial to Ella Fitzgerald’s 1958 rendition. Blue skies are nice, although, if I could change it the sky would be pink, like the pink in a gorgeous sunset. Everyone has their own version of optimism.

Leibniz, a German philosopher, defined optimism by coining the phrase “the best of all possible worlds.” For him, optimism is an attitude that reflects a belief in positive outcomes and that positive behaviors will result in the best life worth living. Being optimistic in the world we are living in right now is difficult, especially if it doesn’t come naturally to you.

The glass half full or half empty question is used to determine a person’s worldview. If you recall from my excerpt, mine is rather skeptical and a clear indication that I’m an over-analyzing skeptic. Whatever your worldview is, regardless of how you self-identify: optimist, pessimist, realist, idealist, nihilist, skeptic, and whatever color your skies are in your world — remember blue days won’t last forever. So…

Blue days
All of them gone
Nothing but pink skies from now on
